Inkblot Art Academy and Sturgeon Shipyard are two new stages coming to the game, along with the return of Port Mackerel. In Port Mackerel it can be seen that the sponge cubes from the first game’s single-player have been added, similarly to the ink rails being added to Moray Towers.
Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Rainmaker all return to Ranked Battle in Splatoon 2. The type of ranked mode will changed every two hours and now your rank will be separate for each mode. League Battle is also being introduced where you and your friends can pair up to take on ranked matches for two hour increments. Once the two hours are up, you will be awarded a medal based on your performance.
New abilities for gear have revealed too! Thermal Ink allows enemies to be seen behind walls once shot, object Shredder lets you take out defense barriers more quickly, Quick Respawn reduces respawn time, Respawn Punisher increases respawn time for both you and the opponents who splat you, and Drop Roller is handy tool that lets you do a dodge roll after landing from a Super Jump.
SplatNet 2 is coming as apart of the Nintendo Switch Online app and will allow you to track stage schedules, stats, and lifetime inkage. This is also the app used to invite and voice chat with friends in Private Battles.
Content updates containing new weapons, gear, and stages are planned to release over the next year. Two of these include the Splat Brella, which can be used to block incoming attacks, and the special weapon called Bubble Blower, which can create huge ink bubbles.
Finally, Splatfests are also returning and will continue on through the next two years. The first Splatfest will take place before the game actually releases and can be played through a free demo on Nintendo eShop. Download the demo and participate in the Cake vs. Ice Cream Splatfest on July 15th from 3:00 p.m. PT/7:00 p.m. PT.
