Gyms in Pokémon GO have temporary closed due to the major new update coming to the game soon. A overhaul of the Gym system, a new Raid Battle mode, and new items are just some of the latest additions coming to the app.
By spinning a Gym’s Photo Disk, you can receive items just as you would at a PokéStop! However, that’s just the beginning as Gyms will now have players assigning six unique Pokémon to each location. Each Pokémon in the Gym will then have a motivation meter that will decrease over time. This meter can be refilled with berries but once it’s depleted the Pokémon then will leave the Gym.
Raid Battles are Pokémon GO’s new cooperative experience that let up to 20 people take on a single opponent. When a Egg appears above a Gym, that’s your notice that a Raid Boss is about to appear. Once the timer on the Egg is depleted, the boss will then be active for battle.
To participate however you’ll need a Raid Pass which can be obtained by visiting a Gym once a day or by purchasing one from the in-game shop. Also note that you can only hold one Raid Pass at a time. Once your pass is spent and the boss is defeated within the five-minute time limit, you’ll then get the opportunity to capture the extra powerful Pokémon!
Rare Candies, Golden Razz Berries, and Technical Machines are new items coming to the game that can only be obtained after defeating a Raid Boss. When used on a Pokémon, Rare Candies will turn into that specific Pokémon’s type of Candy. Golden Razz Berries up your chance to catch wild Pokémon and fully recover a Pokémon’s motivation meter. TM’s can be used to permanently teach your Pokémon a Fast or Charged Attack.
A release for this update hasn’t been given but Raid Battles are planned to roll out as a Beta in the coming weeks. Subset players around the world will be able to try out these Raid Battles at certain Gym locations. Stay tuned for more information in the next few weeks!
