Today Nintendo has confirmed that production on the Wii U has officially ended. An image of two Wii U consoles was found and translated by Kotaku to read “Production is scheduled to end soon (within Japan).”
Nintendo of America later issued a statement to Kotaku confirming that remaining Wii U units have already been shipped to retailers:
“We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”
With the Wii U on its way out, Nintendo is now focused on their next platform, the Nintendo Switch. More information on the system is planned to come on January 12th during the live Nintendo Switch Presentation.
Nintendo Switch launches in March 2017.
