After being very secretive, Playtonic Games has revealed tons of new information on their Kickstarted platformer, Yooka-Laylee. Since the initial announcement, the team has grown three times in size and has been working hard to deliver the game they’ve been striving to make. In their blog post they announced plot details, game mechanics, and much more.
The villain of the game was shown to be Capital B; a greedy business man who seeks to absorb the world’s literature and turn it into profit. It’s then up to the pair of Yooka and Laylee to take down Capital B from the inside of his own company, Hivory Towers. Along with Capital B, Playtonic talked about two new characters named Dr. Puzz and Dr. Quack. The two are said to add to the world of Yooka-Laylee in both story and gameplay.
Speaking of gameplay, details on how the collectibles would expand the game were given as well. The Pagies that Yooka and Laylee collect are used to unlock levels within Hivory Towers. Upon collecting more and more Pagies, extra sections of levels can then be explored. There are also collectible Quills that are used to purchase more moves for Yooka and Laylee. The player can purchase any move they want in any order they want from the in-game character, Trowzer.
Finally, those who backed the Kickstarter at a certain tier will gain access to a special demo of the game called “Toybox”. The demo is its own standalone game and has no connection to the full release. It’s a small taste of what’s to come in the future when the game officially launches.
More information on the game is said to come in Edge Magazine’s next issue on May 26th. Yooka-Laylee will also be at E3 this year where presumably more of the game will be shown.
A release date was not given but the team did confirm they are still working towards the original release window of Fall 2016. However, if the title still needs more development time they will delay it if necessary.
